The Edmund Rice Schools Trust Charter

September 2006 saw the launch of the Edmund Rice Schools Trust Charter within the Christian Brothers Grammar School.

Edmund Rice’s first school in Waterford was in a renovated stable, and he lived in the Spartan loft upstairs. His lodgings were in stark contrast to his former life as a successful and wealthy business- man. However for Edmund Rice, this decision was the fruit of a long period of prayer and reflection. Edmund decided his was going to dedicate his life to the education of the poor. His first care was for the boy’s spiritual well being, but for him there was no artificial separation between the spiritual and the practical.

Inspired by Edmunds vision and mission a community of Religious Brothers was formed based on deep faith, love of neighbour, and the pursuit of justice. Today this vision continues in the work of the Christian Brothers’ schools. These schools have identified key elements which are essential to realising the vision of Edmund Rice. These are:

  • Nurturing faith, Christian spirituality and Gospel based values
  • Promoting partnership in the school community
  • Excelling in teaching and learning
  • Creating a caring school community
  • Inspiring transformational leadership
