5k & 10K Run 2017

10k news cover

On a glorious Saturday morning over 300 participants took part in our annual 10k and 5k run/walk.  There were 110 registered for the 5k run and 150 for the 10k run with several more participating in the walk. Both the 5k and 10k races started promptly at 11am, with some of the top athletes in the area and beyond, some travelling from Belfast and further afield to participate.  These athletes were joined by many of the school’s students and their families. It was a great family day and community occasion for the school with mothers and their babies, grandparents and whole families participating and competing along side our own students and their teachers. The school is delighted with the level of support it received and thanks all participants for taking part.

The ‘Spirit of Enda Dolan’ cup was also awarded to Tom Quinn who was the first CBS student to complete the 10K race.  The 5k ‘Spirit of Enda Dolan’ shield went to top CBS athlete Cathaoir Donnelly. Winner of the 10K Male Open was Paul Barbour (Derry Track Club) in a time of 33:30 and winner of the 10K Female Open was Pauline Mc Gurren (Sperrin Harriers) who completed the course in 39:10.

The school would also like to thank all the CBS staff, students and outside agencies RAYNET, Order of Malta, P.S.N.I. and notably Terry Canning, who all provided valuable support to this major event.

The proceeds from the race will go to the Edmund Rice Development ‘Education for Liberation’ Programme.  This programme focuses on education as a fundamental human right, one that too many children around the world are being denied. The aim this year was to raise enough money to provide one meal per pupil every day for a year in an Edmund Rice School in Zambia.

The school received excellent support from a number of sponsors and would like to acknowledge the following local businesses for all their valuable contribution: Logan Corry Solicitors, Lairdesign, Lairds Jellewers, Murray Dental, Scotts Fuels, John McCaffrey Solicitors, Patrick Fahy & Co Solicitors, Gortrush Food Services, Mc Ginns Spar Killyclogher, Centra, Brookmount Road, Omagh, Strathroy Diaries, Lynas Foodservice, Brakes Food Wholesalers, Dermot Lynchs Supermarket, Clanabogan, Coca Cola, Mc Girrs Spar, Omagh, Subway Omagh, Henderson Food Service, Peter Bradley Physiotherapy, JB Plant Hire and Supervalu Omagh.
