Omagh CBS 3 – 3 St Paul’s Bessbrook (CBS win 10-9 on penalties)
The U12’s were involved in a thriller against St Paul’s Bessbrook at Omagh Leisure Centre as they went behind twice but fought back to finish 3-3 after exta-time. The goalscorers were Ronan Swift, Daniel McGurren and Dara McGarvey. The resulting penalty shootout was a spectacle as no fewer than nineteen penalties were scored before a winner could be found with CBS goalkeeper Turlough O’Hagan saving his opposite numbers penalty.
U12 School’s Cup Quarter-Final
St Joseph’s College, Derry 1 – 4 Omagh CBS
The youngest of the CBS teams travelled to Derry to take on St Joseph’s College and duly booked their place in the semi-finals of the top tier competition with a clinical performance.
It took the Omagh boys some time to find their feet but after a frantic opening few minutes the boys settled and began to dictate proceedings and ten minutes in they found themselves in front as Tomas Gallen broke free to round the home goalkeeper and coolly slot home. Daniel McGurren then saw the goalkeeper make an excellent stop when through one-on-one but he was not to be denied moments later as he made no mistake this time to slot into the bottom corner and put the CBS in the driving seat. St Joseph’s responded well and turned the screw leading up to half-time and only the width of the crossbar denied them a lifeline just before half-time.
The second half started the same as the first half ended with St Joseph’s pushing for a way back into the contest and they again struck the crossbar but fifteen minutes in they left the backdoor open and Gallen again raced clear to round the goalkeeper to make the score 3-0. The CBS put some gloss on the score-line as McGurren fired in his second of the game after the ball dropped to him at the back post, but credit to St Joseph’s as they kept pushing and were rewarded with a penalty in the closing minutes which was duly dispatched. The Omagh side now face St Malachy’s College in the semi-finals.
U12 School’s Cup Semi-Final
Omagh CBS 1 – 5 St Malachy’s College
CBS U12 soccer team suffered defeat at the semi-final stage of the NI School’s Cup in Dungannon on Friday. They faced a highly fancied St Malachy’s College team from Belfast and they lived up to their billing as they proved both ruthless and clinical, scoring four goals without reply in the first half to leave the game out of sight for the CBS juniors.
The CBS made a disastrous start and found themselves three goals down after only six minutes. Within one minute of kick-off the St Malachy’s striker used his pace to glide onto a through ball and fire a shot on goal which Turlough O’Hagan did well to save but the frontman reacted quickest to fire into an empty net. Not two minutes later the CBS were left absolutely shell-shocked as a hopeful punt from midfield sailed through the air and high into the CBS net. At this point the young Omagh team were on the ropes and St Malachy’s were absolutely ruthless as they fired in a third goal in the sixth minute. The supporters feared the worst at this point but the CBS managed to steady themselves and for the remainder of the half matched their opponents without really threatening. As the clock ticked towards half-time St Malachy’s struck a knockout blow as a cross from a corner taken short struck the crossbar and the rebound was tucked home.
The second half started as badly as the first, as straight from kick off St Malachy’s attacked and after a goalmouth scramble poked home their fifth. All credit to the young CBS team as they could have completely crumbled at this point but instead they reacted with pride and started to play the way they had been playing all year, with intensity and fight, moving the ball well. They were rewarded with some good chances and Matthew Garrity had the ball in the net only to see it ruled out for offside. The young striker kept going and he got his consolation goal as he fired home from a tight angle soon after.
As can often happen on these occasions, especially at such a young age, the Omagh boys did not perform as they have shown they can, but painful as the defeat was, they will have learned some invaluable lessons. It is a great achievement to reach the last four of the competition and they will undoubtedly come back stronger next year.

The U14’s faced Castlederg High School in the last 16 in a local derby at Youth Sport and it turned into an absolute cracker with the CBS eventually coming out on top, 3-2 in extra-time, but in truth the game could have went either way. The CBS goals were scored by Peter Colton, Mark Kennedy and Brandon Downey.
School’s Cup Quarter-Final
St Malachy’s College, Belfast 5 – 1 Omagh CBS
There was to be no such luck for the CBS U14 side as their School’s Cup journey ended with a heavy defeat in Belfast against an excellent St Malachy’s side. The Omagh boys travelled knowing they would be up against it but they started brightly and after ten minutes they were rewarded as Cillian McCrory rose highest at the front post to glance Brandon Downey’s excellent cross into the bottom corner. St Malachy’s responded well and began to dictate proceedings and scored twice towards the end of the half to go in at the break 2-1 up.
The second half started evenly but St Malachy’s continued to be clinical and with their first chance of the half they made the score 3-1. This seemed to spur the Omagh side on as they began to take the game to the home side and they thought they had made a game of it as Harley Patton’s free-kick struck the crossbar and appeared to bounce down into the net before being cleared but unfortunately the referee was the only person in the ground who didn’t share that view. The CBS continued to push to get themselves back into the game but as they did so they left holes at the back which St Malachy’s exploited with ruthless efficiency to score twice in the closing minutes. First, CBS netminder Thomas Meenan produced a great save from a penalty only to see the ball rebound to the penalty taker who wasn’t going to miss at the second opportunity. And in the final seconds the Belfast side scored again on the break to secure a deserved victory.

Omagh CBS 3 – 2 Portadown College
CBS U16’s through to Quarter-Finals
Omagh CBS U16’s left it late to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the NI School’s Cup after a hard fought victory over Portadown College at Omagh Leisure Centre last week. In a tense affair, Omagh CBS twice got their noses in front only to be pegged back by a dogged and hard-working Portadown side and it took a late winner to settle the tie with the Omagh men eventually running out 3-2 winners.
The game started with the CBS seemingly getting into their stride by controlling the ball and creating some half chances, but it wasn’t until 15 minutes in that they created their first real chance as Charlie Donnelly was denied by a great save from the Portadown goalkeeper after he turned sharply in the box and curled an effort towards the far post. The Omagh side looked to push on and exert control on the game but the visiting netminder had other ideas as he expertly denied Callum Daly twice in quick succession. The CBS eventually made the breakthrough on thirty minutes as Charlie Donnelly raced on to a through ball to coolly slot into the bottom left corner. The home team were unable to extend their lead and could have conceded in the last minute of the half as they failed to deal with a long free-kick but the Portadown attacker lifted the ball over the crossbar.
As the second half started, it was the Portadown side who had the bit between their teeth as they pushed for an equaliser and it looked to be coming as the CBS made a sluggish start after the break. Indeed, it took only five minutes for the scores to be level as Portadown equalised as they attacked down the left and squared the ball for their frontman to fire past Aidan Colton. The game became scrappy for the next ten minutes but an excellent piece of play involving Ben Kelly, Paudi Dillon and Daly was finished by Kelly as he smashed the ball home from inside the box. The CBS searched for a third goal to give themselves some breathing space but with fifteen minutes remaining the visitors found another equaliser. The Omagh boys showed some character to respond again as they pushed for the winner and they were rewarded when a blocked shot fell to Donnelly who made no mistake from twelve yards to give the CBS a 3-2 win. The boys now get a breather over Christmas before stepping up preparations for the quarter-final tie away to Edmund Rice College in January.
School’s Cup Quarter-Final
Edmund Rice College 0 – 1 Omagh CBS
Omagh CBS leave it late to secure School’s Cup semi-final place
Omagh CBS U16’s secured their place in the School’s Cup semi-finals last week as they overcame an excellent Edmund Rice College (ERC) side after extra-time at Seaview, Belfast. The Omagh men had to dig deep as they left it late to come out 1-0 winners.
The CBS came out of the blocks quickly and could have put themselves ahead in the first minute as Paudi Dillon found himself one on one with the ERC goalkeeper but the netminder was quick off his line to produce an excellent stop. After the fast opening, the first half continued at a frantic pace as both teams looked to settle into the game. Neither team produced much in the way of clear-cut chances as ERC just edged the possession stakes. Midway through the half Charlie Donnelly stung the palms of the home keeper and later Nathan Farry produced an excellent drive from distance which had the ERC custodian scrambling to tip over the bar. The first half ended with both defences standing firm.
The visiting Omagh side came out for the second half with the bit between their teeth and looked to step up a gear as they pressed for an opener and as the half wore on they began to create chances but found the ERC goalkeeper in inspiring form. First, Donnelly tried to round the goalkeeper after being played through by Tom Gavin but the netminder got down to get a hand on the ball. The excellent Ben Kelly skimmed the upright after firing across goal from the right side of the penalty area and then the ERC goalkeeper somehow kept out a powerful header from captain Callum Daly. As the CBS piled on the pressure the home side were always dangerous on the counter but the CBS backline of Charlie McCrory, Nathan Farry, Dillon Chism and debutant Ruairi McCullagh were excellent throughout and the game remained deadlocked and headed for extra-time.
The first period of extra-time was a cagey affair as neither team wanted to make a mistake but the CBS began producing chances in the second half of extra-time as Kelly, Donnelly, Dillon and Gavin were all denied, either by brilliant goalkeeping or heroic last ditch defending. As the minutes ticked down the visiting support were beginning to think it was not going to happen until the Omagh side were awarded a free-kick twenty yards out with under a minute left on the clock. Charlie McCrory stepped up and rifled a rocket of a free-kick into the top corner to send the team and support into raptures. The CBS still had to survive a scare as with the game now deep into injury time ERC earned a free-kick outside the CBS penalty box and the ERC forward picked out the top corner only for goalkeeper Aidan Colton to somehow get his fingertips to the ball and deflect the ball onto the crossbar.
The Omagh side now await the draw for the last four which will be played in February.
School’s Cup Semi-Final
Omagh CBS 4 – 2 Holy Cross College
Omagh CBS and Holy Cross College travelled to the Brandywell to face-off in a West Tyrone derby with a place in the School’s Cup final at stake. The game lived up to its billing as two excellent sides went toe-to-toe and an enthralling encounter with twists and turns unfolded as the outcome hung in the balance right until the dying seconds. It was the Omagh men who eventually booked their place in the showpiece occasion, winning 4-2 after extra-time.
The game started with a bang as Holy Cross College (HCC) found themselves one nil up with only twenty five seconds on the clock. Hesitation in the CBS backline allowed the HCC attacker to steal the ball on the edge of the CBS box and he wasted no time in firing the ball across the penalty area to be clinically dispatched by his strike partner. The frantic opening to the game did not let up but the Omagh boys showed excellent composure to react to such an early setback and set about gaining a foothold in the game.
HCC were moving the ball very well in the opening stages and were finding holes in the CBS press, opening up room for their midfielders, leaving it very difficult for Callum Daly and Brian Gallagher in the CBS midfield to exert any authority. Despite edging possession, HCC were not creating any clear-cut openings and any efforts they did have were confidently dealt with by goalkeeper Aidan Colton. As the half wore on the CBS began to create some opportunities of their own as Tom Gavin got himself free down the left side of the penalty area but his cross was cleared by the HCC defence. Minutes later Charlie Donnelly found himself in a similar position after he rolled his marker only to see his cross flash across the face of goal with nobody able to add the finishing touch and as the game moved towards half-time Charlie McCrory and Paudi Dillon were becoming more influential. One McCrory cross from the left just required a touch but no less than three CBS attackers got in each other’s way as the CBS went in trailing one nil at half-time.
After a half-time team talk the Omagh side came out with renewed vigour and started the second half in emphatic fashion taking only five minutes to find the equalizer. Good work down the left by McCrory and Gavin saw the ball fall to Donnelly just outside the six-yard box and the front-man swept the ball home. The CBS continued to drive forward and Ben Kelly was beginning to cause problems down the right channel and the second goal arrived after fifteen minutes as Kelly won a free-kick on the right of the penalty box. McCrory swung in an excellent ball which was met by captain Daly who powered a header into the roof of the net. HCC were not done there as they reacted well to going behind and went in search of an equalizer forcing the CBS back and with ten minutes remaining, they duly found the goal they were looking for as a free kick from the left was headed home from close to the penalty spot. Both sides regrouped and looked for a winner, but the deadlock could not be broken in normal time.
Into extra-time and the CBS started strongest as they looked to put themselves in the driving seat and they did not have to wait long to get their reward as a nice passing move saw Dillon release Gavin on the left side and the wide man rifled his shot into the far corner. The remainder of extra-time became a backs-to-the wall performance from the CBS as HCC piled on the pressure in search of another equaliser but the CBS stood firm with Dillon Chism, Nathan Farry and Ruairi McCullagh in the Omagh backline in no mood to let the lead slip. The Omagh support had to hold their breath in the second period of extra-time as HCC had the ball in the net but the referee had blew up for a foul on Colton. In the final minute of extra-time the CBS were finally able to breathe easy as substitute Sean Broderick chased down a backpass to block the clearance and as the ball fell to him inside the penalty box he made no mistake to send the Omagh side into the School’s Cup final.
The CBS will now face The Boys Model School, Belfast after the St Patrick’s break with the exact date to be confirmed.
School’s Cup Final
Omagh CBS 2 – 2 Boys Model (CBS won 5-4 on penalties)
Omagh CBS U16’s were crowned NI School’s Cup champions after they defeated Belfast Boys Model school at the Blanchflower Stadium, Belfast in the final last Wednesday. They had to come through an absolute nail-biter, which finished 2-2 after extra-time, and had to be settled on penalties, in which the Omagh boys held their nerve to win 5-4.
The CBS travelled to Belfast to take on their illustrious counterparts having not lost a single match since they were defeated at the Quarter-Final stage of the NI School’s Cup in Year 8. The boys won the U-13 School’s Cup in 2019 and reached the final at U-14 in 2020, only to see the trophy shared as coronavirus took hold. Despite this unbeaten record stretching back to 2018, the local boys were still touted as underdogs as they travelled to their opponent’s backyard bidding to make it ‘three in a row’. Two goals from Charlie Donnelly, five clinical penalties and a penalty save from Aidan Colton saw the trophy travel west to the CBS.
The first half was not one for the purist as both teams struggled to settle on the ball and produce much in the way of quality apart from a few glimpses from both teams but it was not lacking in intensity. The match started as many expected, at a frenetic pace, with both sides creating chances in the opening exchanges. The Boys Model had the first opening less than a minute in as their frontman was found with a yard of space eighteen yards out but he blazed over. The CBS responded minutes later as some excellent work from captain Callum Daly on the halfway line released Ben Kelly but his shot was well saved. Charlie Donnelly had his first glimpse of goal six minutes in as he outpaced the Model backline to cut inside from the right but again the Belfast goalkeeper produced an excellent stop and from the resulting counter-attack CBS goalkeeper Aidan Colton was forced into an excellent save low to his left. The CBS took the lead on eight minutes as Kelly and Paudi Dillon played a neat one-two in midfield to allow Kelly to surge towards the penalty box before he squared for Donnelly. The frontman still had a lot to do as he took a touch before swivelling and firing low into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. There was little in the way of chances after the goal until the game burst into life in the dying minutes of the half. First, the Model fired agonisingly wide from a tight angle before Kelly collected an excellent pass from Nathan Farry to outpace two defenders and fire a shot from the edge of the penalty area only to see his effort well saved. The Model were always looking dangerous from set-pieces and in first half stoppage time they got their reward as a corner was nodded down at the back post and the Model attacker poked home to level the scores.
The second half was a much better spectacle in terms of football as the CBS looked more composed on the ball as they moved it around the pitch and five minutes into the half an excellent passing move involving Tom Gavin, Brian Gallagher and Paudi Dillon saw Donnelly receive the ball in the penalty box and he made no mistake expertly firing first time past the goalkeeper to put his side in front. The Model responded quickly and the lead lasted less than four minutes as the CBS were outdone by another set-piece. A free-kick from the edge of the box was headed home by the Boys Model midfielder. The Omagh men responded well to the setback and were playing their best football of the game as centre-backs Dillon Chism and Farry began distributing the ball well, allowing full-backs Charlie McCrory and Ruairi McCullagh to get forward at every opportunity. It was from a McCullagh cross that the CBS could have retaken the lead as his angled ball found Donnelly inside the penalty box but his volley was well saved and on the other flank Gavin and McCrory were causing the Model defence all sorts of problems. The Model were always dangerous from set-pieces and Colton had to be alert to tip over a volley from the Model striker as it fell to him inside the penalty box but neither side could find a way through as the match finished two each after ninety minutes.
Into extra-time and the CBS were looking the stronger without creating many clear-cut openings. The introduction of Sean Broderick provided fresh legs in the midfield and this proved important as the clock ticked down. The only chance of note fell to Dillon on the edge of the box, but his sweetly struck volley was well saved by the Model netminder as the final whistle sounded soon after. The game would be decided on penalty kicks and the Omagh boys showed nerves of steel to convert their first four penalties. Colton made himself the hero as he produced an excellent save to stop the Model’s fifth, allowing captain Daly to coolly stroke home the winning penalty to send the enthusiastic support into raptures.
A truly momentous occasion for the CBS boys and one that will live long in the memory of the players, and the supporters who travelled to Belfast, as they brought the NI School’s Cup back to Omagh.

Omagh CBS 3 – 1 Trinity College, Belfast
Omagh CBS U12’s followed up their Gamble Cup success by firing themselves into the hat for the last 16 of the NI School’s Cup after a tense 3 – 1 win over Trinity College at Omagh Leisure Centre last Thursday.
The CBS started the match brightly, taking the game to their opponents and could have found themselves two goals up in the first ten minutes with carbon copy attacks as Harley Patton drove down the left side and sent two tantalising crosses along the six yard box and twice the onrushing Cillian McCrory was only millimetres away from finding the back of the net. The CBS did find themselves a goal up after fifteen minutes as excellent play in the midfield by Eoin McEvoy released Patton and he made no mistake as he surged into the penalty box and fired a low shot into the bottom corner. This seemed to wake Trinity College up and they began to push for an equaliser. It duly came after twenty minutes as poor defending from a free-kick allowed their midfielder a tap in at the back post leaving the scores level at half-time.
The CBS boys found themselves pinned back for the opening ten minutes of the second half as the sheer physical size of their opponents started to cause problems. Ronan McSorley in goals for the CBS was assured in everything he did giving confidence to the backline of Liam McGuigan, Sean Harley, Senan Doyle and Frankie O’Goan, who stood firm in the face of intense pressure. The midfield duo of Conor Gormley and Turlough Collins defended resolutely and did everything they could to gain a foothold in the middle of the park. Slowly the CBS came back into the game with the introduction of Emmett Patton giving them some extra bite. The CBS managed to take the lead against the run of play as a swift counter-attack was started by the tireless work of frontman Mark Kennedy and rounded off by Harley Patton with an excellent finish. The goal seemed to rattle Trinity College and the CBS regained a measure of control in the game, although both sides continued to create half-chances. The CBS finished the game with four minutes remaining as good work by Kennedy and Harley Patton allowed McCrory to tap in at the back post to send the CBS into the last 16 of the competition.
NI School’s Cup 4th Round
St Joseph’s, Derry 2 – 1 Omagh CBS U12’s
The CBS year 8’s were looking to join the U18s and U14s in the quarter finals when they took on St Joseph’s Boys, Derry but it wasn’t to be as they fell to a narrow defeat. There was little between the two sides in what was a scrappy game as neither side were able to get a foot on the ball and retain possession. St Joseph’s went ahead after fifteen minutes with the first clear opening of the game but the CBS boys battled back and equalised through a Harley Patton strike just before half-time. Patton picked the ball up outside the box, beat his marker and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner to leave his team on level terms. The second half became even more scrappy as both teams cancelled each other out and it was going to take a slice of luck for either team to find a winner. That luck fell to St Joseph’s with five minutes remaining when a deflected cross dropped to the home attacker and after his strike hit his own player it fell to another St Joseph’s attacker and this time he made no mistake. The Omagh boys looked to find an equaliser and camped themselves in St Joseph’s half for the final five minutes but were only able to trouble the home goalkeeper with a couple of tame shots. The disappointment for the CBS boys was obvious at the final whistle but they can take heart from their performances this year and will have gained great experience.
Fermanagh & Western Gamble Cup
The Gamble Cup, organised by the F&W School’s FA and hosted this year by Castlederg High School, took place on Tuesday past. In all, 15 teams entered the tournament and some fantastic football was on display on the day.
It proved to be a very tight competition with little separating the top teams. The CBS sent two teams to Castlederg in search of the trophy and Team B were very unlucky not to progress to the semi-final stage as they lost out on goal difference after 6 group games. Of those 6 games the CBS boys won 3, drew 2 and lost only once giving an excellent account of themselves in the process.
Team A, meanwhile, started the competition with a 2-1 win over Fivemiletown College and that proved to be the only goal they conceded throughout the entire tournament. The CBS went unbeaten in a very strong group, winning 5 and drawing 2, to top the group and progress to the semi-finals. There, they met a strong and resolute St Aidan’s High School and the CBS made it to the final with a hard fought 1-0 win.
Omagh CBS and Castlederg High School faced off in the final and it was an extremely evenly matched game with both teams playing an exciting brand of attacking football. Both goalkeepers deserve special mention for their performances in the final, keeping their teams in the game with a string of excellent saves. No winner could be decided after normal time and the teams took to the field for extra-time. The CBS edged themselves in front early in extra-time with a Mark Kennedy goal and Harley Patton finished the game in the dying seconds, smashing the ball into the net, to ensure the CBS lifted the trophy for the second year in a row.

St Ronan’s, Lurgan 3 – 3 Omagh CBS (U14’s) (CBS win 5-4 on penalties)
The CBS U14 team travelled to Lurgan to take on a strong St Ronan’s team and had to do it the hard way as they were held to a 3-3 draw and faced the lottery of a penalty shoot-out. The Omagh boys held their nerve in the end to qualify for the quarter finals.
The CBS started the first half a little cagey and St Ronan’s were showing why they were highly rated in this competition, fashioning a couple of early half chances. The CBS grew into the game and soon began to trouble the St Ronan’’s rearguard with Kelly and Donnelly feeding off the tireless work of Dillon and Daly in the middle of the park. It was Donnelly who opened the scoring on the twenty minute mark after good work from Dillon give him time on the edge of the box to cut inside and fire into the bottom corner. St Ronan’s responded to the setback and began looking to get behind the CBS backline of Teague, Farry, Chism and McCrory but they dealt impressively with the threat and relieved the pressure. Donnelly increased the CBS lead as he picked the ball up twenty five yards out, turned and fired a low drive which just sneaked through the home goalkeepers legs and found its way over the line to leave the CBS two goals to the good at half-time.
The second half was a different game as St Ronan’s changed shape and looked to attack the Omagh side, and their intent was clear within the first few minutes of the half as they won a succession of corners. The CBS were defending well but Daly, Dillon and McAleer were finding it difficult to get a foot on the ball allowing St Ronan’s a period of sustained pressure. The Lurgan team thought they had pulled a goal back but it was ruled out for offside and in a rare CBS attack Broderick latched onto an excellent ball from McAleer only to see his left footed strike hit the outside of the upright. With fifteen minutes to go St Ronan’s reduced the deficit through a disputed penalty and it was not long before they got themselves level, through a wind assisted free-kick from thirty five yards that deceived Colton in the CBS goal and flew high into the net.
The equaliser actually had a positive impact on the CBS as they looked to take the game to St Ronan’s like they had done in the first half and they were rewarded with ten minutes left on the clock as Kelly fired in a half volley to put the Omagh side in the lead once more. As the clock ticked down the CBS were reasonably in control of the game but with thirty seconds to go a deflected shot fell to a St Ronans attacker at the back post and he made no mistake despite loud calls for offside. Having led twice the Omagh boys had to pick themselves up as the game went to extra-time.
During extra-time the CBS again held the upper hand without creating any clear-cut chances and the game found its way to a penalty shoot-out which the Omagh men won 5-4 to secure their place in the quarter-finals.
NI Cup Quarter-Final
St Brigid’s 0 – 5 Omagh CBS
The CBS U14’s fired themselves into the semi-finals of the School’s Cup last week with an entertaining 5-0 win against St Brigid’s at the Brandywell Stadium. The scoreline would suggest otherwise, but this was anything but easy for the Omagh men and they had to put in a solid performance to come away with the win against a dangerous St Brigid’s side.
At a blustery Brandywell Stadium the opening exchanges were fairly even, with both teams getting used to the big pitch and settling into their surroundings. It took around 15 minutes for the first real sight of goal for either side as Charlie Donnelly tried his luck from distance, flashing his shot narrowly over the bar. The CBS settled well after this and Paudi Dillon and Callum Daly began to gain control in the middle of the park alongside Reece McAleer, and Donnelly and Tom Pap-Gavin were causing problems through the middle. Having said that, St Brigid’s were always dangerous on the counter, and their left winger, in particular, was proving to be a threat every time he got the ball, but he was marshalled superbly well by Oisin Teague and Nathan Farry. As the half wore on the CBS were more controlled in possession and were looking more threatening going forward and they were rewarded on 25 minutes. Donnelly picked up a pinpoint pass from Farry on the right side of the box and weaved his way past two defenders before firing a low drive inside the near post to give the CBS a deserved lead. For the remainder of the half the Omagh men were in control but were unable to add to their lead.
St Brigid’s made some tactical changes at half-time and in the opening ten minutes of the second half the CBS found themselves under pressure as St Brigid’s created some good chances. Their best chances fell to their frontman who blazed over when well placed inside the penalty box and saw a second effort well saved by Aidan Colton, before the rebound fell to another St Brigid’s player and this time it was well blocked by Farry. The CBS weathered the storm and soon adapted to the new tactical approach from St Brigid’s and started to exert some authority on the second half. Farry and Dillon Chism were in control at the back and Charlie McCrory was looking assured in possession and showing some nice touches going forward. The CBS found themselves two goals to the good fifteen minutes in as Donnelly was played through by Dillon and the frontman made no mistake as he calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner. From this point the Omagh side never looked back as they grew in confidence as Sean Broderick saw a shot saved, but they were further ahead four minutes later when Pap-Gavin fired a shot from the edge of the area which deceived the home netminder and found its way into the net. Twenty-five minutes into the second half the game was over as a contest as Donnelly picked the ball up and drove towards the penalty box before curling an unstoppable effort into the top corner from the edge of the area to complete his hattrick. The Omagh men weren’t finished there as Pap-Gavin slotted home Ben Kelly’s cross after an excellent team move to add some gloss to the scoreline.
All in all, a good performance for the CBS against a strong St Brigid’s side and a place in the last four as the boys now look forward to the draw for the semi-finals of this year’s School’s Cup.
NI Cup Semi-Final
Omagh CBS fire themselves into School’s Cup Final!!
Omagh CBS 1 – 1 Lurgan Junior High (Omagh CBS win 4-3 on pens)
Omagh CBS U14 Soccer team fired themselves into the NI School’s Cup final for the second year in a row as they defeated Lurgan Junior High in a tense semi-final in Dungannon last week. The two sides couldn’t be separated during normal time and the match was decided by way of a penalty shoot-out, with the CBS holding their nerve to make it through to the showpiece occasion.
The two sides met at the quarter-final stage in 2018 with Lurgan running out 1-0 winners and went on to win the competition so this was always going to be a tough test for the CBS. If there were any nerves, the Omagh side were not showing them in the early stages as they started strongly and could have been a couple of goals to the good in the opening ten minutes as Charlie Donnelly and Tom Papakyriacou-Gavin drew fine saves from the Lurgan goalkeeper. This set the pattern for the first half as Lurgan found it difficult to gain a foothold as Callum Daly and Paudi Dillon controlled the midfield, allowing the CBS to retain possession and search for the opener. During the first half the CBS created a number of chances but were unable to break the deadlock as Donnelly was twice foiled by the fingertips of the Lurgan goalkeeper and Dillon and Sean Broderick both saw shots saved when well placed. Charlie McCrory, who was in excellent form all afternoon, and Reece McAleer, fired in some dangerous set-pieces but no one was able to take advantage and somehow the game remained level heading into half-time.
As the second half got underway the CBS looked determined to find the opener and pinned Lurgan in their own half for large spells, but their opponents defended superbly. The CBS defence had to remain on their toes as Lurgan were always a threat on the counter-attack but Nathan Farry, Dillon Chism and Oisin Teague kept their concentration and were alert to any danger. Goalkeeper Aidan Colton did have to make one excellent save as a speculative effort from 25 yards was heading for the roof of the net but otherwise had a quiet second half. The CBS continued to probe but with Lurgan now camped in their own half, space was increasingly hard to find. The Omagh side remained patient and moved the ball well but found it difficult to fashion any clear openings as the game drifted towards extra-time.
At this stage the game had a penalty shootout written all over it as Lurgan defended superbly and the CBS looked to have run out of ideas but the Omagh men had not given up and towards the end of the first period of extra time a CBS corner fell to Farry who took one touch, swivelled and unleashed an unstoppable volley into the roof of the net. That looked to be game over but credit to Lurgan they fought back and were rewarded in the dying seconds as a free-kick was met at the back post by their winger to level the tie and take the game to the dreaded penalty kicks.
After dominating for the majority of the game the CBS and their supporters would have been forgiven for thinking this wasn’t going to be their day but the boys showed immense character to triumph in the shootout. Colton was the hero, saving no less than three penalties, while McCrory, Donnelly, Daly and Farry converted theirs to send the Omagh support into raptures as the CBS progressed to the final.
A massive congratulation to the CBS boys, but they will know the hard work begins again if they want to retain the trophy they won last year. They will now face fellow CBS school St Mary’s, Belfast, in the final with the date and venue to be confirmed.

Omagh CBS 7 – 0 De La Salle
The CBS U18 squad lined up against last years runners-up, De La Salle, in the last 16 at Youth Sport and despite the look of the final scoreline, faced a tough test. In the opening ten minutes De La Salle dominated possession and the CBS had goalkeeper Adam Groogan to thank for producing an important save when De La Salle’s pacy frontman broke through on the left-hand side and found himself one on one with the CBS keeper. The CBS began to settle after that and started to press the visitors, forcing mistakes, which allowed the home team to get a grip on possession. The CBS found themselves a goal to the good after twenty minutes when a corner was half cleared and Finn Grimes fired a volley into the far corner. The Omagh side continued to squeeze their opponents and were playing some excellent football and it was no surprise when they increased their lead as Niall Bowes fired a half volley past the visiting goalkeeper from the edge of the box to lead 2-0 at half time.
De La Salle flew out of the blocks in the second half but the CBS defence of Burns, Brian Campbell, McAnea and Ethan Campbell, who were excellent throughout, stood up to the test and continued to show composure on the ball allowing Luke Devlin and Miller time and space to feed frontmen Northern and Shea Devlin. The CBS looked dangerous every time they broke forward and Shea Devlin made no mistake as he was set free on the right and this was swiftly followed by a fourth from Luke Devlin as he weaved his way into the box before rounding the keeper and slotting home. At this stage the game was over as a contest as De La Salle dropped their heads and the CBS were ruthless in adding more goals. Shea Devlin scored his second and Northern got his name on the scoresheet before Shea Devlin completed his hattrick.
Overall an excellent performance from the CBS as they look forward to the draw for the quarter finals in the New Year.

CBS 6 – 2 Aquinas Grammar School
The CBS U12 soccer team welcomed Aquinas Grammar School to Omagh Leisure Centre on Friday and a very good display saw them win 6-2 and put themselves in the hat for the last 16.
The CBS started brightly and were ahead inside four minutes when Ben Kelly surged clear of the Aquinas defence to slot confidently past the Aquinas goalkeeper. Kelly could have had a second shortly after when he forced a smart save from the visiting netminder, but he didn’t have to wait long as he put the CBS two up after ten minutes with a smart finish after some excellent work from Brian McGrath in midfield. The CBS seemed to relax a little too much after this and allowed Aquinas to get a foothold in the game as they afforded them too much space in the midfield areas. Indeed, the visitors had a couple of chances to pull a goal back as their attacker struck the crossbar with a fine strike and then a scramble in the penalty area following a corner was eventually cleared by the CBS defence. Apart from those couple of chances the CBS defended superbly for the remainder of the half and Fionn Collins and Shae Gallagher looked dangerous going forward.
The second half saw Aquinas come out of the traps early and force a couple of early corners, but the CBS managed a counter-attack from one such corner and Kelly raced clear to fire home to complete his hat-trick. Again, the CBS allowed Aquinas back into the game and they managed to reduce the deficit following a corner as the CBS failed to clear their lines and the visiting striker was able to poke the ball home. Aquinas could have had a second shortly after when they again hit the woodwork, but Collins put the game beyond doubt when he tapped home from close range following good work from Kelly. The CBS upped it a gear in the final minutes and Gallagher drove forward to release Kelly who made no mistake to slot home his fourth of the game. The CBS were not finished as Collins unleashed an unstoppable drive into the top corner from outside the box to put the home side 6-1 up. Aquinas were able to grab a consolation right on the whistle to leave the final score 6-2.
The CBS will now travel to the winners of Larne High or Abbey Community College in the last 16 in December.

School’s Cup 4th Round
Larne High 2 v 7 CBS
The CBS under 12 soccer team moved into the Quarter-finals of the School’s Cup with a convincing 7-2 win against Larne High School on Friday. The local boys made the long journey to the east coast on a bitterly cold day and despite the blustery conditions put in an impressive display to progress to the last eight of the competition.
The CBS started brightly and were ahead within two minutes when good work by Fionn Collins released Ben Kelly who strode clear of the home defence to calmly slot home. This settled the away side and in truth the CBS never looked in any trouble from that point on as they doubled their lead on six minutes when Kelly broke clear of the Larne backline to put the CBS two up.
The CBS found themselves three goals to the good within fifteen minutes and Kelly found himself on a hat-trick after he reacted quickest when Collins’ shot was well saved by the Larne goalkeeper to slot home from close range. By this stage the CBS were well and truly on top as Brian Gallagher and Sean Hagan took control of the midfield and the CBS backline, marshalled superbly by Oisin Lynch, dealt ably with any threat Larne produced. Kelly was then brought down in the penalty box and Collins made no mistake with the resulting penalty, blasting the ball high into the roof of the net to leave the score 4-0 at half-time.
The second half started with more of the same and within five minutes of the restart Kelly got his fourth after latching onto a defensive error and he placed his shot wide of the diving goalkeeper. After having a couple of range-finders Shae Gallagher made no mistake by drilling home into the far corner after being played through by Brian Gallagher. Shae Gallagher was then fouled in the area but was unable to convert the penalty he had won as the Larne keeper made an excellent save. The final CBS goal came after a fine strike from Collins rebounded off the cross bar and Jamie Duffy was on hand to prod the ball home from close range. The CBS seemed to ease off in the final few minutes and that allowed Larne the opportunity to score two consolation goals but by that stage it was job done.
The CBS boys will now have to wait until after Christmas to find out their Quarter-final opponents.
School’s Cup Quarter-Final
CBS 0 – 3 St Columb’s College
CBS U12’s suffer defeat in School’s Cup quarter-final
The CBS under-12 soccer team bowed out of the School’s Cup on Friday past at the quarter final stage. The boys had yet to suffer defeat this year, but they were finally beaten by a very strong St Columb’s College at Youth Sport. St Columb’s ran out 3-0 winners but the game was a much tighter affair than the scoreline suggests.
In the opening exchanges St Columb’s started brightest with the CBS struggling to settle into the match, with perhaps some nerves on the big occasion affecting them. Having said that, while St Columb’s were dominating much of the ball they rarely threatened the CBS goal as the defence of Fearghal and Adrian McGurren, Oisin Lynch and Michael Murphy proved very difficult to break down. As the first half wore on the CBS came more into the game and fashioned a couple of chances but both Ben Kelly and Mike Sharkey were unable to get a clean strike when well placed inside the opposition penalty box. Unfortunately, these misses proved costly as midway through the first half St Columb’s moved the ball quickly from right to left and a deflected cross fell to the St Columb’s winger at the back post who prodded home from five yards with the help of another deflection. The CBS responded straight away after that setback and Brian Gallagher, Sean Hagan and Fionn Collins began to get a grip in the midfield areas but they were guilty of wanting too much time on the ball which St Columb’s were not going to allow. Three or four times a quicker release of the ball would have set Kelly or Shae Gallagher through on goal but instead a St Columb’s defender was able to block the pass. With five minutes left of the first half St Columb’s won a corner and from the resulting cross their big number nine rose highest in the box to nod home from six yards leaving the CBS two goals adrift at the break after a very tight first half. Before the whistle CBS goalkeeper Aidan McDowell had to come to the rescue of his team by producing an outstanding save to tip the ball onto the crossbar after a powerful strike from the St Columb’s frontman.
To the credit of the CBS they showed great character to dominate the second half, throwing everything at St Columb’s in search of a goal which would bring them back into the game. St Columb’s were happy to defend their lead and the CBS found it difficult to break down a well organised and stubborn defence despite controlling much of the ball. As the CBS probed for a breakthrough St Columb’s remained dangerous on the counter attack but the CBS backline dealt ably with any threat. As the half wore on the home side exerted more pressure and thought they had a penalty when Kelly broke free down the left side only to be felled inside the box with only the goalkeeper to beat but to the dismay of the CBS support the referee waved play on. Despite this setback the CBS continued to threaten, and it took a blatant handball on the goal line to deny Collins after he shot from inside the box. This time the referee had no choice but to award a penalty but surprisingly did not issue a red card. Unfortunately for the CBS they were unable to reduce the deficit as Kelly struck the crossbar with the penalty. This was to be the final chance of the game for the CBS and it was over as a contest with two minutes left on the clock when St Columb’s broke down the right and the midfielder found his number nine in acres of space inside the CBS penalty area and he made no mistake from six yards to score his second of the game.
The CBS were visibly disappointed at the final whistle, but they can be very proud of themselves after suffering their only defeat of the year. At this level of competition it is fine margins which decide games, but the character shown and some of the football played by the CBS throughout the year bodes well for the future.
CBS Line-up: Aidan McDowell, Fearghal McGurren, Adrian McGurren, Oisin Lynch (c), Michael Murphy, Sean Hagan, Brian Gallagher, Mike Sharkey (Cillian Loane), Shae Gallagher (Eoin McQuaid), Fionn Collins, Ben Kelly

Fermanagh & Western Gamble Cup
CBS win Gamble Cup
Omagh CBS were crowned as champions as the Fermanagh and Western Schools Gamble Cup took place last week in Lisnaskea. The Gamble Cup is contested by Year 8’s from the Fermanagh and Western area and eight schools entered this years competition. During the group stages each school had the opportunity to face-off against each other in a round robin format and there was some fantastic football on display. The CBS and Castlederg High School finished as the top two teams and qualified for the final. When the two teams met in the group stage the CBS were 1-0 winners but it took a last second goal from Shae Gallagher to give them the win. The final was another tense affair with little between the teams and once again it was a late goal, this time from Mike Sharkey, which decided the contest.
The CBS boys now turn their attention to the Schools Cup where they face Aquinas Grammar School in the 3rd round.

School’s Cup Semi-Final
Integrated College Dungannon 0 – 4 Omagh CBS
Omagh CBS sealed their place in the U13 School’s Cup final for the second time in three years with an impressive win against Integrated College Dungannon (ICD) in the semi-final last Wednesday. In a game of two halves, the CBS raced into a four-goal lead in the first half thanks to goals from Sean Broderick and a Charlie Donnelly hattrick. In the second half, ICD piled on the pressure, but the CBS stood firm to reach the showpiece final.
The CBS came up against a very talented ICD team which included a number of Northern Ireland academy players but the Omagh side got their tactics spot on in the opening exchanges and ICD struggled to settle into the match. The CBS quickly found their rhythm and their high energy approach allowed them to take control of the game and dictate the play for large parts of the half. Within ten minutes the CBS found themselves a goal to the good as Nathan Farry sent Charlie Donnelly racing clear of the home defence and he made no mistake as he calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner. The CBS did not let up with Tom Papakyriacou-Gavin causing problems down the left side and it was from one such attack the CBS doubled their advantage as Papakyriacou-Gavin sent over an excellent cross to the far post and Sean Broderick drifted in unmarked to head high into the net. Mid-way through the half ICD began to settle into the game and were beginning to get more control of the ball but failed to threaten the CBS goal. With ten minutes of the half remaining some good approach play by Paudi Dillon and Callum Daly in the midfield allowed Donnelly to turn on the edge of the box and fire a shot into the bottom right corner and the same player completed his hattrick five minutes before the break as he pounced on a mistake by the ICD centre-back to coolly round the goalkeeper and slot home from a tight angle.
The second half was in complete contrast to the first as ICD showed their technical ability and controlled the ball for long periods pushing the CBS further and further back. A combination of the CBS knowing they did not need to push forward, and the ability ICD had to control the game meant the second half was largely played in the CBS half.
With a four-goal cushion at half-time the CBS would have been forgiven for thinking the game was done and dusted but with a strong home support ICD had other ideas and came out in the second half in search of goals to get them back into the game. The Dungannon men struck the crossbar on no less than three occasions and the CBS had goalkeeper Aidan Colton to thank for making a number of smart saves, alongside a goal-line clearance from Dillon Chism and a disallowed goal as the referee had already stopped play for a head injury to Colton. Despite these scares the CBS defence were exceptional throughout the match and managed to maintain their clean sheet much to the discontent of the home support. The Omagh side did manage a few counter-attacks in the closing stages but never really looked like adding to their tally and they will be disappointed they were not able to manage the game better in the second half.
Having said that, the CBS had the game won after a blistering first half performance and, perhaps understandably, took their foot off the pedal in the second half. The CBS boys now look forward to the School’s Cup final against Our Lady and St Patrick’s, Knock after Easter.
CBS: Aidan Colton, John Edgar, Conor Pritchard (Nathan McGlinchey), Dillon Chism, Nathan Farry, Callum Daly, Paudi Dillon, Sean Broderick (Ben Kelly), Tom Papakyriacou-Gavin, Reece McAleer (Brian Gallagher), Charlie Donnelly (Cormac Hughes)

School’s Cup Final
Omagh CBS crowned School’s Cup Champions
Omagh CBS 4 – 3 OLSPK
Omagh CBS U13 soccer team were crowned NI School’s Cup Champions on Wednesday when they defeated Our Lady and St Patrick’s, Knock (OLSPK) 4-3 in a pulsating final at Allen Park, Antrim. The CBS boys brought home the School’s Cup for only the second time in the school’s history, after winning the competition for the first time in 2017.
The CBS defeated OLSPK in the final back in 2017 in what was a very tough encounter, and this match proved to be no different. Early on the CBS struggled to settle and suffered a scare after five minutes when a long ball over the top set the OLSPK striker through on goal and he clipped the crossbar from the edge of the penalty box. That seemed to wake the CBS up and they began to exert a measure of control on the game. Callum Daly and Paudi Dillon took charge in midfield as the Omagh side carved out a series of openings. After ten minutes a pass from Dillon allowed Charlie Donnelly a snapshot from inside the area but the striker could only fire straight at the goalkeeper. Sean Broderick and Tom Papakyriacou-Gavin were causing problems down both flanks and after fifteen minutes Papakyriacou-Gavin beat his man and sent over a great cross which Donnelly met with a powerful header only to see the ball rebound back off the crossbar. On the other flank Broderick worked his way to the byline and his pullback was met by Reece McAleer who thought he had scored only for the OLSPK defender to push the ball onto the crossbar with his hand. Controversially the referee waved play on and two minutes later, against the run of play, the CBS found themselves a goal down as the OLSPK striker got himself free on the right side and drove into the box and despite a last ditch block by John Edgar, the rebound fell fortunately for the Belfast side and the striker fired the rebound past keeper Aidan Colton. It did not take long for the CBS to restore parity as five minutes later Broderick again beat his man and fired a low cross into the box which fell kindly for McAleer who made no mistake, firing high into the net. The CBS were well on top at this stage and the centre-back pairing of Nathan Farry and Dillon Chism were coping very well with any threat posed by OLSPK and showed great composure on the ball to give the CBS a solid platform from which to launch their attacks. As the half-time whistle sounded the Omagh boys could consider themselves unlucky not to go in at the break with their noses in front.
The CBS started the second half brightly and within five minutes they got themselves in front as Donnelly seized on some hesitation at the back to win the ball and drive through on goal to coolly slot into the bottom right corner. OLSPK fought back and drew level within three minutes as a cross from the left evaded Edgar at the back post and the OLSPK winger made no mistake from six yards. Despite this setback, captain Daly kept driving his team forward and Donnelly produced a piece of magic as he chested down a long ball from Chism and despite a stumble rose to his feet to turn and fire an unstoppable drive into the top left corner from fully 25 yards. The CBS grew in confidence after that and didn’t have to wait long to score their fourth. Papakyriacou-Gavin was a constant threat down the left side and it was from one run that he found Donnelly on the left side of the box and the frontman duly cut inside to fire a low drive into the bottom left corner to complete his hattrick. At this stage with fifteen minutes remaining things looked fairly comfortable for the CBS as Conor Pritchard, Farry, Chism and Edgar were in control at the back and goalkeeper Colton was in assured form. With ten minutes to go however, OLSPK were thrown a lifeline as the referee harshly awarded a penalty for handball against Broderick and the OLSPK striker calmly slotted home to reduce the deficit to one goal. A nervy ten minutes followed but the CBS still carved out a couple of opportunities in the dying minutes as McAleer and Donnelly continued to cause problems. A great run down the left by McAleer created space for Donnelly who squared across goal for Ben Kelly to shoot but the OLSPK goalkeeper reacted well to smother the ball. The Omagh side stood firm until the final whistle to take the crown of School’s Cup Champions.
Winning this competition and being crowned the best in the country is a magnificent achievement and the CBS have now qualified for the UK Championships which take place in England in May 2020, where they will face the respective winners from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. A special mention must go to the travelling support who pushed the boys on until the very end.
CBS: Aidan Colton, John Edgar, Conor Pritchard (Oisin Teague), Dillon Chism, Nathan Farry, Callum Daly, Paudi Dillon, Sean Broderick (Ben Kelly), Tom Papakyriacou-Gavin (Brian Gallagher), Reece McAleer, Charlie Donnelly

Fermanagh & Western Year 9 Cup
CBS boys follow up NI Cup success by winning F&W U13 Cup
Omagh CBS followed up their NI Cup win a fortnight ago by lifting the Fermanagh & Western School’s U13 Cup at Youth Sport last Wednesday.
Some excellent football was played by all teams on the day and it took a penalty shoot-out to decide the winner as the CBS and Castlederg High School played out a scoreless draw in the final. The CBS held their nerve to eventually emerge victorious as the shoot-out finished 5-4.
The CBS remained unbeaten throughout the day as they came through the group stages with victories against Devenish College, St Joseph’s Enniskillen and Omagh High School to set up the decider with Castlederg High School. Goalscorers on the day were Charlie Donnelly (5), Paudi Dillon (2), Tom Papakyriacou-Gavin (2) and Callum Daly. Captain Daly also slotted home the winning penalty. An excellent way to finish the season for the boys as they secured the cup double.

CBS U16s into 2nd round of Schools Cup
Omagh CBS U16 soccer team started their Schools Cup journey with a 1-0 win over St Columba’s, Portaferry last week. The boys produced a dominant display in their first match of the season with the only thing missing being the finishing touch.
The CBS took a few minutes to settle but once they found their stride they took complete control of the game and were never really in any danger. At the back Brian Campbell, Michael McAnea and Oisin Gormley were faultless throughout, along with goalkeeper Adam Groogan whose distribution was first class. The majority of the CBS best attacks started from the back as they switched play from side to side and launched attacks at pace when the opportunities arose. The CBS had several chances in the opening twenty minutes with Sean O’Donnell, Odhran Brolly and Oisin Miller continuously working themselves into good positions only for their final ball to let them down. The breakthrough came in the 25th minute as Miller found Brolly in acres with a fine through ball and the midfielder produced an excellent finish from twelve yards out. The CBS boys should have been out of sight at half-time but the score remained at 1-0.
The second half was more of the same as the CBS dominated and created chance after chance but again their decision making in the final third let them down. Despite the CBS domination, as long as the score remained at 1-0 St Columba’s were always in the game and they very nearly took the match into extra-time with five minutes remaining. From their first corner of the game a St Columba’s attacker met the cross with a powerful header which had to be cleared off the line by Gormley. Despite this late scare the game finished 1-0 to the CBS who have now booked a home tie against Newry High School in the second round.
CBS Line-up: Adam Groogan, Oisin Gormley, Brian Campbell (c), Michael McAnea, Kian Murphy, Sean O’Donnell, Matthew Ballard, Luke Devlin, Oisin Miller, Odhran Brolly, Ethan Campbell

School’s Cup 2nd Round
CBS 4 – 1 Newry High
CBS U16s into 2nd round of Schools Cup
Omagh CBS U16 soccer team put themselves in the hat for the 3rd round of the Schools Cup with a 4-1 victory over Newry High School at Omagh Leisure Centre last week. The game ended comfortably enough for the local boys, but it wasn’t until the second half that they took control of the game.
The first half started with the CBS on top without creating any clear chances and the game became a scrappy affair with neither team exerting any control, but the CBS did manage to fashion a couple of chances when Gavin Potter was denied by the Newry netminder when through on goal and Luke Devlin had an effort cleared off the line. The CBS made the breakthrough on twenty-five minutes when Potter slotted home from ten yards after Conor Bradley played him through. This should have been the catalyst for the CBS to get the upper hand in the tie but instead they fell asleep at a free-kick and Newry duly punished them after a sliced clearance fell to the back post and was dispatched into the CBS net by the unmarked attacker. The CBS boys created some half chances thereafter, but they went in at half-time with the scores level.
The CBS started the second half brightly, but it wasn’t until they scored their second goal that they really took control of the game. Bradley was making some intelligent runs in behind the Newry defence and ten minutes into the second half he was found by Oisin Miller and he made no mistake in front of goal to put the CBS a goal to the good. From this point on the CBS didn’t look back as they dominated the midfield battle and were rewarded when Bradley was released after excellent work by Ethan Campbell on the left side. Bradley beat his marker and fired his shot in at the goalkeepers near post to put the game beyond doubt. The CBS continued to push for the remainder of the half and with five minutes remaining Bradley was felled in the box and Miller confidently fired the resulting spot-kick into the top corner to add some gloss to the scoreline. The boys now await the draw for the 3rd round but they will know that tougher challenges lie ahead if they are to continue their journey in the competition.
CBS Line-up: Adam Groogan, Oisin Gormley, Brian Campbell (c), Evan Drumm, Kian Murphy, Ethan Campbell, Matthew Ballard, Luke Devlin, Conor Bradley, Odhran Brolly, Gavin Potter

School’s Cup 3rd Round
OLSPK 1 – 0 CBS
The CBS U16 soccer team were handed a tough assignment when they were drawn away to holders, and favourites, Our Lady and St Patricks in the 3rd round of the Schools Cup. The two schools met in the Schools Cup final two years ago with the CBS coming out as victors and again in the semi-final last year where OLSPK took the honours. This year saw them meet again, although this time at a much earlier stage meaning one of them would leave the competition before the last 16. Unfortunately for the CBS it was OLSPK who sneaked into the next round after a 1-0 win in Dundonald.
The game started as expected with neither team giving much away and it was the CBS who had the first real chance on four minutes when Conor Bradley crossed to the far post to find Kian Murphy who fired over when well placed. That miss was to prove costly as OLSPK took the lead two minutes later after a cross was only half cleared and as the ball fell to the OLSPK winger he made no mistake, firing home from twelve yards out. The CBS responded well to this early setback and fashioned a good chance on ten minutes when Odhran Brolly fed Bradley but the striker fired straight at the keeper from just inside the box.
From that moment on the game was not one for the purists as OLSPK sat back looking to hold onto their lead. On a small pitch against a physically strong, direct and well organised OLSPK side the CBS found it very difficult to gain any control in the midfield and were unable to fashion any meaningful chances for the remainder of the game. The only other real chance of the game fell to OLSPK as they struck the crossbar midway through the second half and although the CBS boys could not be faulted for effort they were unable to find a way through a strong OLSPK team who just shaded things on the day.
The CBS boys will be disappointed to exit the competition at an early stage but they can take consolation from the fact that only small margins saw them lose out to the competition favourites.
CBS Line-up: Adam Groogan, Evan Drumm, Brian Campbell (c), Michael McAnea, Luke Devlin, Matthew Ballard, Sean O’Donnell, Kian Murphy, Odhran Brolly, Oisin Miller, Conor Bradley.
Subs: Ethan Campbell, James Simpson, Oisin Gormley, Ronan Collins, Bradley McGinty, Niall Bowes, Davog Devenney, Conor McGuigan.
IFA Futsal Championships
CBS boys victorious in IFA District Futsal tournament
Omagh CBS secured their place in the U15 national IFA futsal championships after winning the Tyrone and Fermanagh heat of the competition at Omagh Leisure Centre on Thursday past. Two CBS teams represented the school and after being placed on opposite sides of the draw the two teams met in the final of the U15 competition with CBS team two coming out on top with a last second goal by Gavin Potter. Both teams won every game throughout the group and knockout stages of the competition and could only be separated by the slenderest of margins in the final. The winners will now travel to Belfast on the 14th November to take on the top teams from all the other districts.
Winners: Patrick Corcoran, Eoin McAnulla, James Simpson, Dara Hayes, Ronan Strain, Gavin Potter
Runners-up: Oisin Gormley, Sean O’Donnell, Kian Murphy, Odhran Brolly, Matthew Ballard
At the same competition two CBS U13 teams narrowly missed out on semi-final spots after finishing as runners-up in their groups.
IFA Futsal Finals
Two teams from Omagh CBS qualified for the National Futsal Finals in November after finishing as winners and runners-up in the Omagh District but suffered mixed results on the day. Against all the district winners across Northern Ireland there was an extremely high standard of Futsal but both teams acquitted themselves well. Team one remained unbeaten in the group stages and made it through quite comfortably to the semi-finals but lost out to Banbridge Academy and team two were unable to make it out of their group despite some good performances.

CBS Boys through to School’s Cup Semi-Final
Omagh CBS U14 Soccer team progressed to the semi-final of the NI Schools Cup with an entertaining and hard fought victory over the Boys Model School in Belfast on Wednesday past. The CBS boys raced into a two goal lead only to be pegged back to two each by a determined and talented Boys Model side. Nerves were jangling with the game going to extra-time but it was the CBS boys who stood firm and a well taken goal from Odhran Brolly proved to be the winner and send the CBS into the semi-final for the second year in a row.
These two sides met at the semi-final stage a year ago with the CBS running out 4-2 winners in a very tight game and this fixture was always going to be close. It was the CBS who bossed the opening exchanges with Odhran Brolly, Ronan Strain and Oisin Gormley taking control of the midfield. After ten minutes, excellent pressure from Brolly enabled him to release Conor Bradley through on goal and he calmly finished past the home goalkeeper to put the CBS one nil up. Skipper Sean O’Donnell and Conor McGillion were causing problems down the flanks and after sixteen minutes it was McGillion who provided the ammunition for Bradley with an excellent ball to split the home rearguard and Bradley produced an outstanding finish by lobbing the goalkeeper from twenty yards. At this stage, the CBS were in control and the centre back pairing of Dara Hayes and James Simpson were dealing with any Boys Model attacks quite comfortably but with twenty five minutes on the clock the CBS were unprepared at an opposition corner allowing the Boys Model time to play it short and their central midfielder produced an unstoppable drive into the top corner to halve the deficit before half-time.
The second half was only three minutes old when the CBS found themselves pegged back to two all. A long goal kick from the Boys Model goalkeeper somehow managed to evade both the CBS midfield and defence allowing the opposition attacker to run through and slot past the helpless Gavin Potter in the CBS goal. This seemed to wake up the away side and they responded by again taking control of the game. For most of the second half the CBS created some good chances with Matthew Ballard causing problems down the right but they could not find a way through. Several players were guilty of spurning excellent chances with Bradley, O’Donnell and Kian Murphy either missing the target or finding the home goalkeeper in good form. There was a feeling that it was not going to be their day and in the closing ten minutes the Boys Model came back into the game and created the best of the chances with one outstanding save from Potter in the closing minutes and a goal-line clearance from McGillion keeping the tie alive. In the end neither side could find the breakthrough and the game went to extra-time.
The CBS just about shaded the opening exchanges of extra-time without creating a clear cut chance until Bradley and Patrick Corcoran produced some good work down the left unleashing a shot which was saved only for the ball to fall to Brolly twelve yards out and he made no mistake drilling a half volley into the bottom corner. The CBS managed to close the game out and will now face either St Josephs, Derry or Our Lady and St Pats Knock in the semi-final next week.
Meanwhile the U12 and U13 soccer teams also made it to the quarter-finals. The U12s were very unlucky to go down 1-0 to Lurgan Junior High in Cookstown. The U13s faced a very strong St Columbs side losing 5-0. The cup runs will serve as great experience for the boys who will look to go further next year. The U16s also have a quarter final, this time in the Schools Plate against Edmund Rice College and it is hoped they can join the U14s in the semi-finals.
CBS Boys suffer defeat in Schools Cup semi-finals
Omagh CBS U14 Soccer team suffered only their second defeat in three years in the semi-final of the Schools Cup prior to Easter. After defeating Our Lady and Saint Patrick’s Knock (OLSPK) in the final of the same competition last year the tables were turned in this years semi-final as OLSPK ran out clear winners with a 4-0 win.
The game started badly for the CBS at a very blustery Meadowbank Arena in Magherafelt as OLSPK went ahead within five minutes with a great finish into the bottom corner of the CBS goal and in truth the boys never really recovered. In what was a fairly even first half, the physical dominance of a strong OLSPK team started to tell and they went 2-0 ahead just before half-time, scrambling the ball home from a corner. In the second half it was much the same, with the CBS huffing and puffing to get back into the game but never really threatening the OLSPK goal with any clear-cut chances. With the CBS pushing to find a lifeline they were always vulnerable on the counter attack and the game was over as a contest when a well struck free-kick found its way into the CBS goal. OLSPK made completely sure in the dying minutes as the CBS were again caught on the counter and the OLSPK attacker made no mistake when sent through on goal.
A disappointing end to the campaign for the CBS boys but they must take massive credit for what they have achieved during the past three years. They must now turn their attention towards the UK Championships in Glasgow in May, which they qualified for after winning the Schools Cup last year. We wish the boys luck in what will be a very tough competition against the best schools England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland have to offer.
UK Schools Championships
Glasgow 25th-27th May 2018
The Omagh CBS Under-14 Soccer team travelled to Glasgow last weekend to compete against the best schools in the UK and Ireland in the UK Schools Soccer Championships. The boys qualified for the prestigious championships after winning the Northern Ireland under-13 Schools Cup last year and faced the Schools Cup Champions from England (St Thomas Moore School, Telford), Scotland (St Ninian’s High School, Glasgow), Wales (Ysgol Plasmawr Rowlands School, Cardiff) and the Republic of Ireland (St Joseph’s College, Galway).
Having won the NI Schools Cup in 2017, reaching the quarter-finals in 2016 and semi-finals in 2018 the CBS boys have only suffered two defeats in three years but they travelled to Glasgow knowing they would be facing teams at the elite level of Schools football in the UK and Ireland. Arriving home having played the English Schools Champions, Scottish Schools Champions and Welsh Schools Champions over the course of the weekend the boys showed they are more than capable of holding their own at the top end of Schools football with each game hinging on fine margins and close decisions.
On day one of the tournament the CBS faced St Thomas Moore School and showed no signs of nerves as they took the game to the English Champions, playing some great football during a first half in which they carved out a number of goal-scoring chances. The pace of Conor Bradley and Patrick Corcoran up front and Sean O’Donnell and Conor McGillion out wide was causing all sorts of problems and how the game remained scoreless at half-time was anyones guess. Unfortunately for the CBS they were punished for not taking their chances when ten minutes into the second half St Thomas Moore took the lead against the run of play. This setback unsettled the rhythm of the CBS and it took them a while to regain the upper hand in the match as they struggled to create any clear-cut chances until the closing stages. During the final ten minutes the CBS turned up the heat as Matthew Ballard and Odhran Brolly regained control in the middle of the park and the introduction of James Loughrey and Kian Murphy seemed to spark new life into the CBS attack. McGillion had a blatant shout for a penalty waved away after his shot was blocked by a hand in the box but two minutes later the CBS were level as Loughrey wriggled free in the corner to deliver a pinpoint cross for Bradley to expertly turn home at the near post. Captain O’Donnell had a great chance to win the match in the dying seconds but his shot was brilliantly turned behind by the English goalkeeper and the CBS had to settle for a point.
On day two the CBS faced St Ninians High and from the kick-off it was obvious they were a first class outfit, undoubtedly buoyed by playing in front of a large home crowd. The CBS had to be disciplined as St Ninians moved the ball around well but they always looked dangerous on the counter attack. It was from one such counter that the CBS went ahead as Bradley burst into the penalty box only to be felled by a Scottish challenge. The same player dusted himself down and slotted home the resulting penalty kick to give the CBS the lead midway through the first half. The CBS back three, Eoin McAnulla, James Simpson and Oisin Gormley, who were excellent throughout the competition, kept their shape well limiting St Ninians to half chances until a mix-up between the CBS goalkeeper Gavin Potter and his defence allowed St Ninians to slot home an equaliser ten minutes before the break. A few minutes later the CBS found themselves 2-1 behind after Ballard was judged to have clipped the heels of his opponent in the box resulting in a penalty. The second half followed the same pattern as the first with St Ninians controlling much of the ball while the CBS defended well and always looked dangerous on the break but neither team carved out much in the way of goalscoring chances. The game remained on a knife-edge until the final seconds when St Ninians scored to put the game to bed although there were loud calls for a handball in the build up to the goal.
On the third and final day of the competition the CBS faced the Welsh Champions. With several players carrying heavy legs after two games in two days the CBS freshened up the starting eleven with the introduction of some of the younger members of the squad. In the opening stages this didn’t seem to make any difference as the CBS played some good football but as the half wore on the bigger Welsh side began to cause problems for the CBS backline and they opened the scoring with an excellent finish into the bottom corner after some good play. The CBS should have found themselves level by half-time as Bradley produced an excellent finish to lob the Welsh goalkeeper only to see his effort ruled out for an extremely dubious offside decision. The match seemed to turn on this decision as the Welsh grew stronger in the second half and hit three goals without reply to run out 4-0 winners, however the scoreline did not reflect the match. The CBS did have another goal disallowed as Aaron McCaugherty slotted the ball into the corner but this time the offside decision was the correct one.
Throughout the three games the CBS boys were excellent and they will have gained invaluable experience from competing at this elite level of schools soccer. Each game was decided on fine margins and every member of the squad returned with their head held high as they did themselves and their school proud.
CBS Squad: Gavin Potter, Conor McGillion, Eoin McAnulla, James Simpson, Oisin Gormley, Sean O’Donnell, Matthew Ballard, Ronan Strain, Odhran Brolly, Patrick Corcoran, Conor Bradley, James Loughrey, Kian Murphy, Dara Hayes, Emmanuel Gbadebo, Aaron McCaugherty, Caolan Donnelly, Mark McAnulla, Daithi McCallan

CBS U16’s through to School’s Plate Semi-Finals
The CBS U16 soccer squad marched into the semi-finals of the School’s Plate after a battling 2-1 win over tournament favourites Edmund Rice College (ERC) on Tuesday. The CBS boys had to come from behind to claim the victory with goals from Ethan Campbell and Luke Northern enough to seal the win. The strong ERC side, narrowly defeated in the final of the Belfast School’s Cup, included two schoolboy internationals and a host of players on the books of Irish League Clubs and the CBS boys knew they would have to be at their best to progress.
ERC started the brighter in the opening stages, moving the ball well without really threatening the CBS goal who stuck to their gameplan of keeping their shape and were able to build some good attacks of their own. Both sides still seemed to be weighing each other up, when in the 17th minute an unlucky deflection saw the ball sail over the CBS backline into the path of the ERC striker who made no mistake from 12 yards. This unsettled the CBS, but only temporarily as Finn Grimes and Luke Devlin started to get a handle in the middle of the park and Adam Traynor, Luke Northern and Shea Devlin were beginning to cause problems in the attacking third. Ethan Campbell found himself running through on goal after good work from Northern and Devlin only to see his effort cleared off the line. In almost a carbon copy attack, Campbell again came off the left hand side to latch onto a pass from Northern only for the goalkeeper to bring him down in what seemed a clear cut penalty. The referee however had other ideas and waved play on. The CBS weren’t to be denied for long as Campbell continued to cause problems cutting in from the left and with two minutes until half-time he wasn’t to be denied, coolly finishing from the edge of the box to leave the score 1-1.
The CBS started the second half as they finished the first looking to press for another goal while ERC were still playing some attractive football. Chances were at a premium in the opening stages of the half and almost out of nowhere Luke Northern found himself twenty five yards from goal with the time to lift his head and hammer the ball beyond the ERC goalkeeper to put the away side in the lead. With still twenty five minutes left on the clock ERC pushed forward in search of an equaliser but the centre back pairing of Eoin Montgomery and Brian Campbell were both in outstanding form aided by full-backs Oisin Miller and Michael McAnea. ERC piled on the pressure without creating any clear cut chances and it was in fact the CBS who looked the most dangerous on the counter-attack. The CBS defence stood firm in the final minutes with the game finishing 2-1 to the CBS.
The CBS sealed their place in the semi-final with an outstanding display and must be congratulated on reaching this stage of the competition. They will go into the semi-final against Banbridge Academy in confident mood and will be looking to go one step further.
CBS Line-up: C. Taggart, O. Miller (K. Gallagher), M. McAnea, B. Campbell, E. Montgomery, L. Devlin, F. Grimes (D. Devenney), S. Devlin, E. Campbell (D. Taggart), L. Northern, A. Traynor.

CBS U16’s suffer defeat in School’s Plate Semi-Final
Omagh CBS U16 soccer team suffered defeat in the semi-final of the School’s Plate on Friday past as Banbridge Academy triumphed 4-0 at MUSA in Cookstown. After an outstanding performance in the quarter-final where the CBS defeated competition favourites Edmund Rice College 2-1, the boys came into the semi-final in confident mood but it proved to be a step too far. The day started badly when the CBS were forced into two changes from the quarter-final due to illness which unsettled the team. The 4-0 scoreline in no way reflected the match and the Banbridge coach admitted his goalkeeper was the man of the match but there is no doubt that Banbridge Academy thoroughly deserved to make it through to the final.
The CBS got off to the worst start with the game only 30 seconds old when Banbridge opened the scoring. The CBS backline were still asleep and a simple ball over the top caused hesitation allowing the Banbridge attacker to steer home from 12 yards. The CBS started to gather themselves after this initial setback and looked to exert themselves on the game but after fifteen minutes they were dealt another blow when a free-kick from the halfway line was headed home to leave the score 2-0. This served to wake up the CBS and they started to control the game fashioning a series of good chances. Luke Northern had an effort tipped over by the Banbridge goalkeeper, Shea Devlin was denied by the netminder when clean through, Eoin Montgomery saw a header well saved and Ethan Campbell and Dylan Taggart both had efforts saved before half-time.
At half-time the CBS had shown enough to think that they could get themselves back into the game and the next goal was going to be the all-important one but three minutes after the restart any hope the CBS had of getting anything out of the game was all but gone. A free-kick on the edge of the box was parried by keeper Daire Corry and it was Banbridge who reacted quickest to hammer the ball into the roof of the net. At 3-0 the game was as good as over but credit to the CBS boys they kept going and created a number of chances in the second half but were either denied by the Banbridge goalkeeper, who had an outstanding game, or the woodwork. Devlin struck the post, Finn Grimes saw two good opportunities saved and Northern, Taggart and Campbell all could have scored. Instead another mix up in the CBS backline saw Michael McAnea and Daire Corry both leave the ball to each other and the Banbridge frontman tapped into an empty net to well and truly put the game beyond doubt.
A combination of missed chances, misplaced passes and defensive errors at key times was the story of the semi-final. The CBS boys must be congratulated for making the semi-final but will be disappointed not to have went one step further.
CBS Line-up: C. Taggart (D. Corry), O. Miller (D. Devenney), K. Gallagher (B. McGinty), M. McAnea, E. Montgomery, L. Devlin, F. Grimes, S. Devlin, E. Campbell (R. Kelly), L. Northern, D. Taggart.

Omagh CBS make history by winning NI School’s Cup!!!
Omagh CBS under-13’s created a piece of history on Wednesday bringing the NI School’s Cup home to Omagh for the first time after a very entertaining and often nail-biting final against Our Lady & St Patricks Knock. The final was played at Moyola FC with the CBS winning 2-1 against a very good and well organised OLSPK side.
As in the semi-final, the CBS boys would have been considered major underdogs for the cup and it was OLSPK who made the brighter start to the game when their striker placed wide from a good position after only 3 minutes. With many of the CBS boys having never experienced an occasion such as a NI final it was understandable that it took them a while to settle into the game, but settle in they did and after some good work in the midfield Conor Bradley picked up the ball 20 yards out, beat two defenders before firing low into the bottom corner to open the scoring for the CBS. After the goal the CBS found themselves under pressure for spells as OLSPK’s direct style and strong physical front three meant it was hard for them to clear their lines and establish any real possession. The midfield trio of Odhran Brolly, Ronan Strain and Oisin Gormley found it difficult to stamp their authority in the middle of the park due to OLSPK’s direct style bypassing the midfield, but they battled hard and played some nice football in parts. Even with the pressure being put on the CBS rear-guard the front three of Shay Northern, Conor Bradley and Patrick Corcoran were always a threat on the break and after 25 minutes a quick free-kick over the top from Oisin Gormley found Conor Bradley who lobbed the keeper from 20 yards to put the CBS 2-0 up to the delight of the travelling support. The CBS had to survive a couple of scares before the half-time whistle as OLSPK hit the bar on two occasions but they went in at the interval firmly in the driving seat.
The second half started with both teams battling hard to gain the upper hand but as the half wore on and with nothing to lose for OLSPK the pressure on the CBS goal began to mount and the CBS back four of Eoin McAnulla, James Simpson, Dara Hayes and captain Sean O’Donnell had to be at their best. CBS keeper Gavin Potter, outstanding on the day, had to be alert to make a series of top drawer saves but he could do nothing when he was eventually beaten with 15 minutes left on the clock when a sliced clearance fell inside the penalty area and was duly placed into the top corner by the OLSPK frontman. Signs of nerves were now beginning to show for the CBS boys as OLSPK threw everything at them in the final 10 minutes but it was the CBS who had the best chances to kill the game in the closing minutes when great work going forward by substitutes Kian Murphy and Matthew Ballard twice set Conor Bradley clear only to be denied by good saves from the opposing goalkeeper. In the end it did not matter as the CBS stood firm and emerged victorious, 2-1 winners.
At the final whistle captain Sean O’Donnell became the first ever CBS player to lift the NI Cup, an outstanding achievement for the squad and an experience and a memory which will stay with the boys for a very long time. The hard work will start all over again as they have now qualified to travel to Glasgow in May 2018 to take on the respective champions from England, Scotland, Wales and Republic of Ireland. For now, however, the boys can bask in the glory of being crowned Northern Ireland Champions.

CBS boys follow up NI Cup success by winning Bawnacre Cup
Omagh CBS U-13’s followed up their NI Cup win by lifting the Fermanagh & Western Bawnacre Cup for the third time after defeating Drumragh Integrated College 1-0 in the final. The CBS boys played some wonderful football in the group stages, emerging top of the group with victories against Castlederg High School, St Aidans High School, Drumragh Integrated College and Devenish College and drawing with Omagh High School. The final against Drumragh Integrated was a very tight affair with CBS skipper Sean O’Donnell scoring the only goal with an excellent volley one minute from time. CBS goalkeeper Gavin Potter went through the entire tournament without conceding a goal and a special mention must go to Odhran Brolly who was awarded player of the tournament after some fantastic displays.
