Overview of Specification

  • Students develop an understanding of construction and the built environment, the importance of health and safety in the construction industry, and the employment opportunities in the industry.
  • Students learn to interpret drawings of domestic buildings and demonstrate awareness of the issues surrounding sustainable development in the construction industry.
  • Students develop an understanding and a working knowledge of CAD in the construction industry.
  • Students complete a project based on one of the following crafts: woodwork.

Unit 1:

Introduction to the Built Environment

 

Students will develop an understanding of construction and the built environment, the importance of health and safety in the construction industry, and the employment

opportunities in the industry.

 

 

External written examination

Unit 2:

Sustainable

Construction

 

You will interpret drawings of domestic buildings and demonstrate awareness of the issues surrounding sustainable development in the construction industry.

 

 

External written examination

1 hour 30 minutes

 

Paper includes questions based on pre-release materials

 

Unit 3:

The Construction Craft Project

 

You must complete a project based on one of the following crafts: woodwork; or

•  brickwork or blockwork.

The craft project is made up of a product and an evaluation.

Computer Aided Design in Construction

 

You will develop an understanding and a working knowledge of CAD in the construction industry. You will produce a portfolio of work, including working drawings for a domestic building and one detail drawing.

BTEC Construction (Double Award)

What is the BTEC Diploma (Double Award) in Construction about?

Choosing to study for the BTEC Level 3 National Award in Construction & the Built Environment qualification is a great decision for lots of reasons. The Construction industry is become a growing sector again with many different specialisms within it. Studying for this qualification will give you a clear path of progression towards eventually working in this industry.

Your BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment is a vocational or work-related qualification. This doesn’t mean that it will give you all the skills you need to do a job, but it does mean that you’ll have the opportunity to gain specific knowledge, understanding & skills that are relevant to your chosen subject or area of work.

This course broadens and expands the specialist work-related focus from the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and is broadly equivalent to two GCE A Levels. There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for employment in the appropriate vocational sector or to progress to third level education.

 

What will you be doing?

You will study 12 units over the course of Year 13 & Year 14.

The BTEC Diploma is the equivalent of 2 A-Levels.

It is solely assignment based—no exams!

How is the Course Delivered & Assessed?

Your teacher will set assignments throughout your course for you to complete. These may take the form of projects where you research, plan, prepare, make & evaluate a piece of work, sketchbooks, case studies and presentations. These are all collated as evidence to form your portfolio of work for the course. A requirement of the course is to incorporate real life site experience and provide evidence of such visits.

 

Year 13:

You will study Units 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, & 17

Unit 1 – Health, Safety & Welfare in Construction & the Built Environment

Unit 4 – Science & Materials in Construction & the Built Environment.

Unit 6 – Building Technology in Construction

Unit 7- Project Management in Construction and the Built Environment

Unit 8-Graphic Detailing

Unit 17– Building Regulations & Control in Construction.

 

Year 14:

You will study Units 2, 3, 5, 10, 43, 50

Unit 2 – Sustainable Construction

Unit 3 – Maths in Construction & the Built Environment

Unit 5 – Construction Technology & Design in Construction

Unit 10 – Surveying in Construction & Civil Engineering

Unit 43 – Employment framework in the Built Environment

Unit 50 – Construction Design Technology

 

Students may choose to go on to study at degree level, do further vocational training or enter employment within the construction industry.
