Key Stage 4

Learning about chemistry is both stimulating and fun. Not only does it help us make sense of the world around us, but chemistry also touches upon the main social, ethical and cultural issues affecting our lives today.

We all experience chemical reactions daily: whether it is breathing, baking a cake or driving a car. Studying chemistry helps explain these and many other interactions, enabling us to analyse all the associated elements and the compounds they form

What will I study and how will I be assessed?

Year 11 Year 12

Chemistry Unit 1: Structures, Trends and Chemical Reactions

Format: An externally assessed written examination consisting of a number of compulsory structured questions that provide opportunities for short answers, extended writing and calculations

Foundation and Higher Tiers

Duration: 1 hour

Weighting: (11% of Double Award science)

Taken: Every November, February and Summer

Chemistry Unit 2: Further Chemical Reactions and Organic Chemistry

Format: An externally assessed written examination consisting of a number of compulsory structured questions that provide opportunities for short answers,

extended writing and calculations

Foundation and Higher Tiers

Duration: 1 hour 15 mins

Weighting: (14% of Double Award science)

Taken: Summer only

Key Stage 5

This specification will encourage students to:

  • develop their interest in and enthusiasm for chemistry (including an interest in further study and/or chemistry-related careers);
  • appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society;
  • develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works; and
  • develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of chemistry and how they relate to each other.

Chemistry#2

What will I study and how will I be assessed?

GCE Chemistry is comprised of two levels: AS and A2. The AS can be taken as a ‘stand-alone’ qualification without progression to A2. However, to obtain the Advanced GCE qualification, students must complete both the AS and A2 levels.

The specification has a modular structure and students are required to study three modules at each level.
