Brief Overview of courses
At Key Stage 4, those pupils who choose to continue with further study in Art and Design follow the NI GCSE specification for Art and Design offered by CCEA. This specification builds on the Art and Design experiences of Key Stage 3 and is designed to promote progression to higher levels of art and design. It aims to develop the following skills:
- creativity and imagination;
- communication and expression using artistic media;
- knowledge and understanding of art and design principles, techniques and processes;
- practical and intellectual skills;
- an ability to produce visual and tactile works (outcomes); and
- aesthetic appreciation and understanding.
What will I study?
Year 11/12
Component 1- Controlled Assessment worth 60% with 2 parts
Part A: Exploratory Portfolio – 25% (no final outcome required) in the form of a sketchbook, journal or other form of portfolio demonstrating core knowledge and understanding of formal visual elements through practical skills. Students explore media, techniques and processes in at least two disciplines and it is internally set and assessed.
Part B: Investigating the Creative and Cultural Industries – 35% (students complete one practical task) Students become increasingly skilled at developing ideas, applying understanding of relevant practices, refining their ideas, recording as they go and using visual language critically.
Component 2: Externally Set Assignment worth 40%
A stimulus paper is released in early January of the examination year (i.e. year of completion). Students complete a minimum of 20 hours of preparatory work in response to the theme. Students also complete a final outcome within a set 10hour examination period.
FINAL MODERATION & EXHIBITION:
In May of Year 12 all work is displayed for moderation by the examining board CCEA.

Component 2 Externally Set Assignment is worth 40%
It is assessed through an externally set examination. It is worth 40 percent of the final award. CCEA issue the stimulus paper in January of the examination year.
The exam takes the form of a stimulus paper. Each student must present preparatory work and a final outcome based on either:
- an idea suggested in the exam paper; or
- the student’s own idea based on the set theme. Students must complete the final outcome within a set period of 10 hours and under controlled test conditions.
FINAL MODERATION & EXHIBITION:
In May of Year 12 all work is displayed for moderation by the examining board CCEA.
Work presented in response to the Externally Set Assignment is internally assessed and externally moderated.
There is a set period of time for the students to develop their preparatory work (a minimum of 20hours) This preparatory work should support the production of a final outcome in fine art, craft or design, in either 2D or 3D.

Brief Overview of courses
At Key Stage 5, those pupils who choose to study Art and Design follow the NI GCE Revised specification for Art and Design offered by CCEA. This specification builds on the Art and Design experiences of Key Stage 4 and is designed to provide students with a detailed understanding of the techniques, processes and methods used in Art, Design and Craft. Inter-relationships between these three elements are explored and students examine art and design from historical, cultural and contextual perspectives.
Technical, expressive, analytical and research skills are fine-tuned and aesthetic understanding is strengthened through investigation and experimentation.
What will I study?
The revised GCE Art and Design is available at two levels, AS and A2.
Students can take:
- the AS course as a final qualification; or
- the AS units plus the A2 units for a full GCE A level qualification.
The full advanced GCE award is based on students’ marks from the AS (40%) and A2 (60%).
Students may follow a broad pathway through Art, Craft and Design – Combined Studies, or choose from one of three specialisms:
- Photography and Lens-Based Media;
- Three-Dimensional Design; or
- Textiles.
The course has four units: two at AS level and two at A2:
- AS 1: Experimental Portfolio
- AS 2: Personal Response
- A2 1: Personal and Critical Investigation (including a 1000-3000 word written investigation)
- A2 2: Thematic Outcome
