Over 200 Pupils Take Part in Spectacular P6 Gaelic Blitz at Omagh CBS

On Tuesday 17th June, the Coolnaguard pitches were alive with excitement, skill, and community spirit as over 200 Primary 6 pupils from 17 feeder primary schools gathered for an exhilarating Gaelic football blitz. Organised by Omagh CBS, the event provided a memorable day of sport, fun, and inspiration for the young players — and a reminder of the strength of Gaelic games in the area.

Blessed with fine weather, the pitches played host to a series of high-energy matches that showcased the emerging talent across the participating schools. The event wasn’t just about competition; it was a celebration of participation and the shared love of Gaelic football among schools, players, and supporters alike.

A major highlight of the day was the presence of former pupils and current U20 All-Ireland winners, Callum Daly, Ruairi McCullagh, and Eoin McElholm, who took time to mentor and inspire the next generation. Their presence added a sense of pride and aspiration for the young players — a living example of where hard work and passion for the sport can lead.

The games were competitive yet played in great spirit, with St Teresa’s PS, Loughmacrory emerging as the winners of the main competition after some thrilling encounters. Other schools also received recognition for their performances and efforts on the day, including All Saints PS, Tattysallagh, St Mary’s PS, Killyclogher, St Lawrence’s PS, Fintona, Gaelscoil Uí Dhochartaigh, An Srath Bán, and Our Lady of Lourdes PS, Greencastle.

Thanks also to Tummery PS, St. Michael’s Dunamanagh, Gaelscoil nag Crann, St Macartan’s Clogher, Christ the King, St Patrick’s Eskra, St Mary’s P.S. Aughnacloy, Holy Family Omagh, St Conor’s Omagh and St Dympna’s P.S Dromore for attending and to all the teachers, support staff, parents and grandparents who attended on the day.

A key factor in the day’s success was the support from a dedicated team of volunteer coaches, made up of current and former pupils, who ensured the smooth running of the event and encouraged the young players throughout. Their involvement demonstrated the strong links between the school and its wider community, and the deep-rooted culture of giving back.

School Principal Mr F.McConnell commented:
“It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic young players, teachers, and volunteers coming together to celebrate Gaelic football. The standard of play was outstanding, and the sportsmanship on display was a credit to all involved. We are especially grateful to our past pupils who gave up their time — and to our U20 All-Ireland winners who continue to inspire those following in their footsteps.”

This P6 blitz has once again reinforced the importance of school sport, not only in nurturing talent but in building friendships, confidence, and community bonds. As the final whistle blew on a fantastic day, it was clear that the future of Gaelic games in the area is very bright indeed.
