Omagh CBS 0-10 Abbey CBS 0-9

Omagh CBS lifted the Rannafast Cup on Thursday 19th December at O’Neill Park but only after a narrow one point win over a highly motivated and well organised Abbey CBS side. The pre match favourites were pushed all the way by their opponents and it took a late point by Diarmuid Martin to seal the win when the game was very much in the balance.

Winning this game saw the Omagh side create their own piece of history as they became the first team from the school to win Dalton, Corn na Og, Oisin McGrath and Rannafast titles.

Abbey proved themselves worthy opponents on the night  as they took the game to their opponents for long periods and in truth they looked the better side all over the park. In fairness Omagh did create the better goal scoring opportunities and but for great saves by keeper Brodie Mc Greevey could have been in a better position at the break.

One of the highlights of the game came before a ball was even kicked when the Abbey team took to the pitch wearing Trillick jerseys as a tribute to the late Jody Gormley who had been manager of this group of players throughout their School careers, and they certainly did his memory proud.
From the first whistle they fought tigerishly for every ball and they knocked a free scoring Omagh side out of their stride and it took a brilliant injury time point from captain Diarmuid Martin to win it for Omagh.

It was clear to see from early on that Abbey were well motivated and up for the contest. Omagh opened the scoring through Peter Colton but Abbey corner forward Ryan O’Hare levelled matters before the Tyrone lads then moved two clear thanks to efforts from Martin and Kieran McDonagh.

Abbey though were giving as good as they got and they levelled through Oisin Byrne and Odhran Reel. However they had keeper Brodie McGreevey to thank for a superb save to deny Cathal Farley.

As the half wore on Abbey were more and more in the ascendancy and they reached the break deservedly two in front following well crafted points from Reel and Conall Gallagher.

Omagh came out for the second half determined to change the flow of the game and they were level after both Colton and McDonagh struck points.  Abbey however were not prepared to go down without a fight. Points from the superb Caolan McEntee and Odhran Reel put them two ahead again as the game entered the final quarter.

Martin then landed an inspirational score from out on the left wing before substitute Aodhan Corry equalised. With tensions high Peter Garrity edged Omagh in front with a terrific score as the clock showed six minutes remaining.

Omagh could have made life a lot easier for themselves but profligacy in front of goals almost cost them. They failed to make the most of the chances they created and Cathal Cunningham was denied an Omagh goal with another superb stop by McGreevey in the Abbey goals.

Two minutes into injury time and the sides were level again after the big midfielder McEntee hit an outstanding equaliser. Extra time seemed a certainly before Garrity won the next kickout and was fouled in possession. He immediately sent the free long into the forward line to Martin who won possession before firing over an outstanding winner.
