The Social Mobility Foundation (SMF) is a charity that runs a range of completely free of charge programmes for high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds.
Young people in Year 13 interested in Banking and Finance, Engineering, Law, No Preference and Digital can apply for an insight programme with a specific employer or in a specific sector (i.e. J.P Morgan Banking and Finance programme, PA Consulting Springboard programme, Law Insight Programme). Every successful applicant will receive mentoring from a professional in the sector, university application support and skills development, and a face-to-face residential internship. Students who are not selected for the employer insight programme will be considered for APP Reach and will receive similar support. This programme lasts through school and university until they are in the career of their choice.
To be eligible, every young person must:
- Have completed their GCSE’s at a non-selective state school, or selective state school, achieving at least 4 grade A’s/7
- Be in their first year of their A-level studies at a non-selective state school or selective state school.
If young people meet the above, they then must meet one of the criteria in option A, or two in option B:
Option A | Option B |
Be care experienced | Be in the first generation of their family to attend university |
Be in receipt of free school meals | Have a household income of £45,000 or lower |
Parent/guardian occupation classified as technical/craft occupations, semi-routine manual and service occupations, routine manual and service occupations or unemployed as per SOC codes 4-9 (SMC) |
The dedicated online APP Reach programme has a criteria of at least 4 GCSEs at grade C*/5 (or above). For students who do not meet the academic profile, considerations can be made for those who have extenuating circumstances.
