If your child is starting a full-time undergraduate course in September 2026 and is applying now for Student Finance, you should complete your household details online at the same time as your child, if you wish for their student finance to be assessed on your income.
In order to complete information online, parents need to create their own Student Finance NI account which will be linked to your child’s account. If parents already have an existing Student Finance account and Customer Reference Number (CRN) from either their own application or from another child they have supported then that should be used.
Most students are able to receive a basic rate of student finance without any household income information.
Your household income information could mean your child may be entitled to more support, and in some instances, receive additional grants.
Include your National Insurance (NI) number when you complete your details online as Student Finance will use the NI number to check parental income directly with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
