Trainee Thatcher opportunity

As part of the Future for Thatch project, Construction Industry Training Board NI (CITB) NI have an exciting and rare opportunity for four people to train in thatching, to help to keep these skills alive and buildings in good repair for the next generation. But the closing date for applications is November 19 so get your applications in now.

Students will receive training through a series of placements and work towards and NVQ Level 3 in Thatching. As a full-time training opportunity, students will receive a bursary to support them over the two-year training period. Students will also receive mentoring support to help them seek employment or establish their own thatching business.

The role is an entry-level opportunity, requiring no previous experience of thatching or construction to take part. Students will receive a wide range of training and experience which will benefit them in their future careers. This will include scaffolding training, health and safety and first aid training, alongside work on real thatched roofs and heritage sites. To get the most out of the programme students should have an interest in thatching or construction, working with their hands, and built heritage or history.

Future for Thatch is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, CITB NI can provide thatching training and raise awareness of and tackle some of the issues surrounding thatching and thatched buildings in Northern Ireland. If you are a thatcher or own a thatched building, you can also get involved in the project through workshops, training and events.
