U13 Soccer team reach NI School’s Cup Final

u13 soccer team news

Our under-13 soccer team reached the final of the NI Schools Cup with a hard-fought victory over the Boys Model School Belfast in the semi-final on Tuesday last. The boys faced a much fancied and well drilled Boys Model team at Moyola FC and came into the match as underdogs, but an excellent performance from the whole squad saw them progress to the final, running out deserved 4-2 winners.

Omagh CBS soccer

The CBS showed signs of big game nerves as the Boys Model started much brighter and were rewarded after five minutes when a sliced clearance from a corner was poked home at the near post by the Belfast team. The Omagh men slowly began to settle and the trio of Brolly, Gormley and Strain started to take control of the midfield, while Bradley, Northern and Murphy were beginning to cause problems for the Boys Model back four. Bradley flashed a shot inches wide after outpacing the defence but he wasn’t to be denied for long as he collected an excellent pass from Odhran Brolly down the right channel before beating two defenders and firing into the far corner from a tight angle on fifteen minutes. The boys rose in confidence after their equaliser and Bradley could have had a second, firing over when well placed before Kian Murphy put them in front with an excellent strike from the edge of the box after 25 minutes. It wasn’t all plain sailing as the pacey Boys Model attack were always a threat on the counter and keeper Gavin Potter had to be on his toes to come off his line and clear the danger on a couple of occasions.

The Belfast side came out for the second period all guns blazing and camped themselves in the CBS half. It was no surprise that the equaliser came eight minutes in, as the CBS failed to clear their lines and the Boys Model fired home from 12 yards. Two minutes later the CBS caught the Boys Model defence napping as Bradley latched on to a through ball and restored their lead with a cool finish. This served as a wake-up call for the Omagh side as they regained control in the midfield and Hayes, Simpson, O’Donnell and McAnulla stamped their authority on the Boys Model attack. They did have to survive a couple of scares as the Boys Model twice fired over from inside the penalty area but the tie was settled when Murphy scored a brilliant overhead kick ten minutes from time.

The boys will now travel to Ballymena Showgrounds for the showpiece occasion on 26th April.
